About Augustus E. Wendell

Augustus Wendell is an Assistant Professor of the Practice in the Department of Art, Art History & Visual Studies at Duke University, where he serves as Visual Arts Program Coordinator and Core Faculty in the Computational Media Major. As an educator, technologist, and artist, he holds a practice-based research appointment focused on computational media arts that bridge technical experimentation with critical inquiry about algorithmic systems and their cultural implications. At Duke, Augustus directs the Culture I/O Lab and co-directs the Arts Research Lab, institutional platforms for exploring the intersections of art, technology, and cultural research. He co-founded the Arts Practice Faculty Network to build infrastructure supporting practice-based research across the university. His leadership extends to curating and organizing exhibitions and developing digital heritage initiatives that engage communities through innovative technological approaches. Augustus's interdisciplinary research brings together collaborators across dance, archaeology, digital humanities, and museum studies. He has developed computational tools for archaeological visualization and museum installations in partnership with institutions including ISAW and the Field Museum. His artwork has been exhibited internationally, examining how computational systems mediate contemporary culture through AI-driven installations, critical photography of technological infrastructure, and experimental performance that foregrounds the material conditions of digital media.
